In Kanata

What the work looks like in Kanata

At homes, Kanata concrete work is mostly patios, walkways, front steps and driveways that have settled or cracked after decades of freeze and thaw, usually replaced with interlock. We request Ontario One Call locates, break out to the line your landscaper wants and rough-grade the base.

In the March Road business parks, the job is different: slab sections cut out for new plumbing or equipment in a tenant fit-out, coordinated with the GC. That work happens indoors in occupied buildings, so dust control and working hours are agreed with the landlord before we start.

Beaverbrook, Kanata’s original neighbourhood, dates from the mid-1960s, and much of Katimavik-Hazeldean followed in the 1970s and 80s. More about Kanata

Typical projects

  • Driveways and walkways before interlock
  • Back-yard patios and hot tub pads
  • Precast and poured front steps
  • Interior slab sections in commercial fit-outs, to the GC’s layout

Permits & paperwork

Before work starts in Kanata

Breaking out a patio, walkway, slab or driveway does not usually need a demolition permit, but it does need Ontario One Call locates before any ground work. We request them, and they take about five business days. Private lines, such as a feed to a garage, are not located by One Call, so tell us where they run.

Pre-1990 homes in Beaverbrook and Katimavik need a hazardous materials survey before the quote is final. Kanata North commercial strip-outs follow the building owner’s designated substances report.

Any building from before 1990 gets a hazardous materials survey first. If it finds asbestos or other designated substances, abatement is referred to licensed specialists, and our crew starts after the clearance letter.

Disposal

Torn out. Hauled out.

Every job ends ready for the next trade. Here is where the debris goes.

Clean concrete, brick and asphalt are kept separate from soil and garbage so they can go to aggregate recycling, where they are crushed for reuse. Rebar and mesh are cut out for scrap.

On larger jobs, a roll-off bin from a licensed bin company sits on your property, and the bin company hauls it away and handles the tipping at its own facility.

On smaller jobs our crew loads our own trucks and hauls to the Tomlinson Waste Recovery Centre at 106 Westhunt Drive in Carp, which sorts mixed construction and demolition debris for recycling and accepts commercial loads.

Kanata is a short drive from the Carp Road corridor, so most loads go straight to the Tomlinson Waste Recovery Centre, and commercial jobs get a weigh ticket for every load.

Asbestos & permits

We don’t touch asbestos. That’s the point.

Some demolition companies will tell you they do it all. We do the demolition, and we make sure the steps before it happen in the right order, by the right people: survey first, licensed abatement, then us.

Read the asbestos and permit FAQ
  1. Built before 1990? Ontario law puts the onus on the owner to identify designated substances before a contract is signed. That means a designated-substances survey.
  2. Survey finds asbestos? A licensed abatement contractor removes it, and you get a clearance letter.
  3. Utilities and permit. Gas, hydro, water and sewer disconnected where needed. Enbridge alone takes about 44 days, so it gets requested first.
  4. Then we demolish. No change orders for surprise asbestos, no stop-work orders, no crew exposed.
